The film is an imagining of the events predicted to occur in 2012.
The story follows two distinct groups - one is a troupe of four American travellers in Mexico, and the other is a group of scientists working for NASA. Both are influenced by an astral object about to collide with Earth, which is somehow connected to an undisturbed treasure hidden within an ancient Mayan temple in the Mexican wilderness.
